Let's Chat: Ableist Language

This is something that I started working on and changing for myself for the past year or so. It's something I hadn't really thought about, until I started reading more  - some really great things on twitter that folks shared. Ableist language happens when you use language usually associated with someone who has disabilities to describe someone or a situation that has no disabilities. By doing so you are saying that those who do have disabilities are less than. See how it's a problem?

It's not the easiest thing to do, and I still get it wrong sometimes, but by paying more attention to what I say I've noticed just how often I used ableist language. It is not something I do, nor something I let people get away with any more. Calling someone crazy or insane is wrong!

This, looks at some questions folks might have on it, and why it matters. Here is a list of words that are considered ableist - and a slur for some.

What do you think about this?
