Five for Friday

This has been a week of grumps. Keiden has been grumpy and tantrum throwing every day for long stretches of time...not exactly conducive to a good mood for me either. And because I eat my feelings, I've fallen off the no chocolate, baked goods and soft drinks wagon. But I'll be getting back on it, because that's all you can do.

This song, has been helping with the grumps. Oddly, for me at least, a friend finds this song sad...I'm find it inspiring. It's from Empire, it' a hiphopera, and the music has just been amazing, especially anything sung by Jussie Smollett.

Lately, Keiden has been saying "bit bit bitbit bitbitbit" a lot. It reminds me of a tongue twister: Betty bought a bit of butter to make a bit of batter. But the bit of butter was bitter so Betty bought a better bit of butter to make a bit of batter. Jerall and I have been trying to remember other tongue twisters, and we both get stuck on red lorry, yellow lorry.

I've been trying one new recipe a month, and this month has been a winner...two new ones in one week. It's been tricky because I want to cut down on our meat consumption, but the most delicious vegetarian dishes have tomatoes, and K is allergic. Please point me to amazing easy vegetarian dishes that don't have tomatoes in them.

Normally while working I tend to listen to music or just work in silence. This week I switched things up and listened to some TED talks. I'm not sure if it's helped my production, but it's certainly helped me feel less bogged down in the work. What do you listen to?

Five for Friday

K had some finger painting fun. More landed up on his chair and him than the canvas :)

Last week I sent off an e-mail to the MA co-ordinator at the university, and still haven't heard back. Each day has added another layer to the giant ball of anxiety that started as soon as I sent the e-mail. Right now, I'm struggling with what I should say in a new e-mail. I figure the old one got lost in a flood of mail.

Recent chats with friends have been about the insecurities that women always seem to have. I see it as a form of impostor syndrome. I also think it's why people are so anxious - we're always worried about being found out as not good enough. And this probably needs a post on it's own, it's just been on my mind because of the unanswered e-mail.

Check out Habit RPG, it's a great tool that has gamified habits, and to-do lists in order to help you get things done. So far, I've managed to scale back on my recent "eat all the carbs" habits. And all the stairs are mine ;)

I love watching the rap battles on YouTube. I recently found Princess Rap Battle...and it's just great. This one speaks to the geek, but be sure to check out Cinderella vs Belle - Sarah Michelle Geller is Cinderella.

The author who started it all

There I was 15 walking around the library looking for something new to read, and there on the pack away trolley I spotted this book:
This cover exactly.
I don't know what it was about it, but I picked it up, read the blurb and figured what the heck. I loved it, it changed my world forever. It was funny, and amazing...and exactly what I needed, without realising it was what I needed.

Terry Pratchett, changed everything for me. It was because of Mort that I found out that fantasy could be funny. It's because of him that I am a lover of fantasy, enjoy satire and have learnt that humour is an amazing tool. There are so many authors whose work I enjoy, that wouldn't have happened if not for picking up his book.

Good-bye Sir, and thank you for sharing your world with us.

Five for Friday: Our first week in Stellenbosch

It was so hot on Monday and Tuesday that Keiden spent a lot of time in his swim broekies.

On Wednesday we went to the library. It was Keiden's first trip, and he loved it. They have a corner just for littles.

We went from a place with very little natural light to an abundance of it. The raised ceiling in our bedroom has meant 06:00 wakes though.
  • Being in a space that's a similar size to our old place, but much better designed has made all of us just so much happier. K has more room to roam, and as a result has done much more cruising than before.
  • J has set hours, and gets home jut before 17:00, the wonder of a 10 minute commute. It's also meant that I'm not alone with K during his crazy hours - I swear it's made me a better mom, because I don't need to empty out my patience well every day.
